Personal Statement

Terry Hsu, born in Taiwan, is in his final year of music school at UCLA. He is both a distinguished Gluck Fellow and a recipient of the Emil Danenberg and Beatrice Zelkin Scholarships, and studies under the esteemed professor and pianist David Kaplan. In recent years, Terry has worked with acclaimed pianists such as Inna Faliks, Frederic Chiu, and Jerome Lowenthal of Juilliard. He has also studied extensively with Norman Krieger and Gabriela Martinez at the Brevard Music Festival of 2023, where he placed in the Brevard Music Competition. He was also a prizewinner at the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota Competition and earned an honorable mention in UCLA’s Rubinyi Piano Competition and has been invited to perform at UCLA’s 2022 and 2024 Chancellor’s Recital. Beyond his dedication to Western classical music, Terry has collaborated with numerous UCLA composers and premiered their pieces in Schoenberg Hall and Lani Hall. His expertise also extends to opera, where he has directed select artists from UCLA’s opera department in the premiere of David Reyes's `El Circo Anahuac: An Aztec Opera.` Currently, he is working with UCLA composition faculty Richard Danielpour on his piece The Enchanted Garden.
