Job Description

About Us:
Sophia Academy is a small, nurturing Christian high school dedicated to awakening the genius of and providing a transformative learning experience for students with learning disabilities. We foster an environment that values creativity and individual growth, where every child is supported to discover their potential. Our mission is to provide personalized, hands-on education that leads to academic and personal success. We seek a passionate and mission-minded English teacher who will help our students flourish in a supportive, dynamic, and faith-based environment.

Job Overview:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate English teacher who is eager to work with urban students who have diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will be creative, flexible, committed to fostering a love for learning through innovative, hands-on methods, and able to teach multiple subjects. Having a variety of hobbies is a plus. As an active believer, you will integrate faith into your teaching, demonstrating Christ-like compassion and modeling Christian principles in both your lessons and your interactions with students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement engaging English curriculum tailored to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities.
  • Utilize creative, hands-on, and experiential teaching methods, including play-based learning, exploration, and activities that foster divergent thinking.
  • Adapt lessons to accommodate various learning styles, providing individualized support and resources to help students succeed.
  • Foster a safe and nurturing classroom environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and emotional growth.
  • Encourage students to express themselves, both verbally and through written work, in a way that is empowering and confident.
  • Integrate Biblical principles and Christian values into lessons, discussions, and classroom culture.
  • Collaborate with other faculty and staff to ensure a holistic approach to each student's education, supporting their academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Maintain open communication with parents and guardians, providing updates on student progress and areas for improvement.
  • Actively participate in school events, chapel services, and community-building activities that support the mission and vision of the school.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field. A teaching credential or certification is preferred, but not required.
  • Active Christian faith with a commitment to living out Biblical values both in and out of the classroom.
  • Previous experience working with students with learning disabilities is highly desirable.
  • Strong creativity, adaptability, and the ability to think outside the box in lesson planning.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with children who learn differently.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Mission-minded with a desire to contribute to a school environment rooted in faith, love, and academic excellence.

Personal Characteristics:

  • A deep commitment to the academic and spiritual growth of each student.
  • An innovative thinker who enjoys finding new ways to engage students in the learning process.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and open to exploring new teaching methods and techniques.
  • A caring and compassionate individual who shows Christ’s love through actions, understanding, and kindness.

Why Join Us?

  • Join a supportive community that values both faith and education.
  • Work with passionate colleagues who share your commitment to students' success.
  • Contribute to a school that focuses on nurturing the whole child—academically, emotionally, and spiritually.
  • Engage in a rewarding role where you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with learning disabilities.
