Personal Statement

I grew up speaking Mandarin Chinese and Korean and received my formal education in them, so please be reassured that you will also be learning what are standardized, native accents. I also studied Japanese throughout high school towards university education and received N1 for JLPT exam. I have working fluency in Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, and English. I've done professional interpretation services for Mandarin-Korean-English during my military services at the Korean DMZ, Panmunjom (where Trump and Kim shook hands in 2019). I am originally a Korean but as my family moved to Shanghai for my father's work when I was 7, I went on to receive 9 years of formal education at a Chinese public school (Shanghai) from 1st to 9th grade. I also took China's National High School Entrance Examination and scored among the top percentiles. I then went to do my undergraduate study at Hong Kong University. Having graduated and worked for a couple of years in Hong Kong, I have now moved to Chicago to study as an AI Master's student at Northwestern University. I live in Chicago-Evanston.
