Mounds Park Academy is a PreK-12 independent school in Saint Paul, MN that serves approximately 575 students from throughout the Twin Cities area. Since 1982, Mounds Park Academy has engaged students in a rigorous college preparatory experience that is demanding, but not draining, and goes far beyond memorization. Students are challenged to apply their understanding to stir the human spirit, stand for justice, and shake the world. Mounds Park Academy is looking for a long-term substitute Physical Education and Health teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. More specifically, we are seeking a versatile candidate who is passionate, detail oriented, and self-motivated. The candidate should have broad experience in supporting students' physical, social, emotional, and personal development, as well as a desire to work collaboratively with other faculty.
Members of our Physical Education (PE) Department work closely with students both in the classroom and on a variety of sports fields and athletic settings. Our ideal candidate has an exceptional knowledge of innovative, creative, and effective pedagogy in physical education, health and wellness curriculum, and the ability and desire to coach one or more sports teams at MPA. Additionally, a passion for working with middle grades students is ideal and one or more degrees in physical education, health and kinesiology, elementary/middle school education, or related fields, is preferred.
It is expected that a successful candidate would:
- Teach multiple sections of Middle School and Upper School Physical Education and Health/Wellness classes using age-appropriate curriculum and pedagogy.
- Motivate and inspire students of various abilities to their personal best.
- Differentiate instruction for skill development and fitness levels.
- Inspire an enjoyment for lifetime physical fitness and well-being.
- Supervise, encourage, counsel, and evaluate students.
- Foster and sustain an effective learning and fitness environment.
- Utilize and incorporate available resources and activities for instruction.
- Communicate with students and parents during scheduled conferences and as necessary to ensure the whole child's needs are met.
- Participate in Physical Education Department and staff development activities.
- Collaborate as a member of high-functioning, highly collaborative department.
- Show an eagerness to contribute to the life of the school outside of the classroom.
- Perform additional duties as needed (serving on school-wide committees, advising a student club, etc.)

- Substantial understanding of the cognitive, social/emotional, and academic needs of the K-12 students and student development.

- Humility, a sense of humor, warmth of personality, and nurturing energy.
- Flexibility and ability to multi-task in a dynamic, creative, and fast-paced environment.
- Experience with modifying physical activity for students with limited abilities.
- Possess CPR certification and First Aid training.
- Has the ability to coach multiple sports.
