Pros: - definitely knows and has a passion for history
Cons: - if you don't go to class, you'll probably do poorly on the exams
The class covers a ton of history and a large span of years so it may seem impossible at first to memorize all of the information. However, as I quickly learned after not doing so well on my first exam after skipping a lot of classes, his tests are based almost entirely on what he says in lecture. So if you attend class and pay attention and take some notes, you'll be fine! (my grades greatly improved once I started going to class more) If you don't like going to class...I'd recommend just memorizing all four-hundred-something years of history in the meager attempt to catch the relatively small amount information that he may include on the test (sarcasm obviously!).

Pros: Cares about his subject.
Cons: Subtlety interjects political views.
If you take careful notes during his lectures and review the text, you should do well on the exams. Make sure to read the T/F carefully, as the wording can be tricky. Professor pretty much told us that he is a socialist/communist/leftist, but most of the time he imparts this view subtlety. Don't think I would take him again, but I faired pretty well in his class.

Prof Zaller is a great teacher, and he really knows his stuff. If you like history, you definitely need to take him. For those of you who don't, still a very easy class to get a good grade. Just go to class and take good notes and you'll be fine. No homework, papers, or projects either btw.

Pros: Learn some new information
Cons: Hard to stay awake in class, monotone voice
Must take good notes for the tests
It can be hard to follow if you do you pay attention and it can be really hard to stay awake. Since the notes are not fully comprehensive because I did not pay attention at times, I wished he had an outline to follow. It is hard to know what is going to be on the tests because he does not review the material.

Pros: Easy.
Cons: Goes off topic at times.
Interesting teaching style. Looks at his notes briefly then starts class at one point and time and then goes on from there without looking back at his notes once. This means that he can go off on tangents, and that you may not know what is important to take note of. His tests are generally easy multiple choice tests with no essays. I finished mine in about twenty minutes and got a 96%. The only people I have seen not do well in this class are those who do not show up to class, and then don't bother to even study.

He does not have any study guide for exams. He just talks and talks throughout the whole class and writes stuff on the board that you can barely read because he only writes in cursive and its messy. Don't even bother getting the book. Just go to class and try not to fall asleep.

Pros: no hw, no quizzes, no attendence
Cons: he just talked and talked and talked for 80 mins, no ppt. VERY BORING! 2 exams determine your final grade, he never gave out practice exams or anything
don't take his class unless you are very interested in history (or you are interested boring lecture)

The guy could probably teach at Cambridge or Oxford, if he wanted to. Definitely take him if you have a genuine interest in history, but think twice otherwise, as his teaching style can be monotonous. No slides, just talk... so you need to have an interest in history to follow him. I am sure he feels little odd to teach to all the engineering minded ppl at Drexel, who find him boring, but common, give him a credit, he is a real history guy.a

Not a fantastic teacher, but not completely terrible I guess. Seems kind of "like a nut" (as someone else put it). During the day before the finals, he told three different groups of students, three different chapters to study from (Yes, we're from the same class).
If you can handle someone talking the whole time while you try to scribble down his pages of notes (not to mention his tendency to jump a few years now and then, without warning I might add) then take him. His grade is comprised of one midterm and one final, no review, no study sheet.
Okay, I guess I didn't like him after all :X

Incredibly hard. always read the book and took notes and still did horrible on the tests. Lectures are boring and hard to stay awake. Is very knowledgeable but has trouble making the info easy to learn. will talk the entire time and just ramble on about kings and queens so fast every 5 min you arent sure what time period he is talking about now.

History is an awful subject, and if you really hate it DO NOT TAKE ZALLER. All he does is talk for an hour and twenty minutes (non stop) while you are writing down every single note. The first day he says if you come to class, take notes and read them you will do fine. That's exactly what I did and I still did really bad. The material on his tests come from outer space. The guy is a loon. DO NOT TAKE HIM....PLEASE!

Some people just don't like history. Personally, I hate it. I literally fell asleep in just about every lecture I went to. SO with that said I'm gonna say attendence isn't all that mandatory cause I still passed. If you can actually suck it up, pay attention and take notes, you'll do great. I just didn't have the strength. I did absolutely NOTHING and got a C and was fine with this. Never have to wrory about history ever again.
And his hair is pretty funny. I was driving on I-95 not too long ago, saw a car with a drexel flag thing on it and he was driving it. I almost died.

I don't know if I can say I have ever learned more from any other professor at Drexel. I think he just might be the smartest person at the university. I learned so much in 10 weeks that I wish the class was longer. He made class very interesting and really got into the material. We had to read 5 books for the class, but they were all very short and very interesting. I will definitely take another class with Professor Zaller.

He was extremely boring. He knows what he's talking about, but his tone is so bland it's so hard to pay attention. I passed with a C just because its two tests midterm and final and it's on what he says and the book...so I would not recommend him at all.

He is a good guy. he is hard to follow at times, because he jumps from one topics to the next so quickly, instead of focusing in 1 chapter. as far as his exams are going. I bombed the first one, because I didn't know what to expect from his tests, as this was the first time I took him. consist of 25 MC and 25 TF. watch out for those of u who don't like TF (i GUESS MOST OF US HATE TF) because this is the tricky part of the exam and can kill u. after the midterm he said if you improved by 10 points (i.e. 5 exam questions each word 2 pts) on the final, he will drop the midterm. I got an A in the final and Overall. so this class was not too bad as I thought it would be.

Not a bad professor. He is an excellent source on history and is interesing because he has been so many places and talked to many people firsthand about the history he teaches.
He knows his stuff..he's a little old fashioned but his exams are made with straightforward questions.. if you goto class takes notes and read them you'll get an "A". Good guy.

i have to admit -- history is BORING, regardless of who the prof. is. he does a good job of keeping my attention by bringing in elements of philosophy and politics in the lectures. however, because of this, he is very hard to follow when taking notes. he's a very smart guy and gives no homework, but your grade consisted of only the average of a mid-term and final. find somebody that knows the material and study with them before each test -- the rest of the course is a piece of cake.

zaller is a great professor and a great orator. i dont know how anyone calls his classes boring, every other history prof i have had have been far more boring than zaller. very witty, very anti-bush, very anti-drexel administration. pretty easy class, attendance optional.

This is a prison sentence. 1hr 30min 2 days a week, and you HAVE to show up. His tests are based on lectures not the book. So, take this class if you wanna sit through a boring class. Many in my class just stopped going and cheated on both tests.

his speeches can get pretty boring, but if you pay attention, you should have no problem getting a B. also, you dont really need to get those two supplemntry books, as they are a waste of your money. also, he is a die-hard liberal, so if u dont like them, u could probably start up a debate with him.
