All quiz and exam questions are identical in the format of solution
His accent with his voice crack is hilarious
Cons: Doesn't know how to respond to questions - gets confused and then just restates what he already said
Uses outdated textbook that can be incredibly unhelpful.
He'll refer you to ancient textbook for assistance
He'll teach a concept using methods and symbols that you don't know the meaning of and he won't explain well if you ask
Lectures, doesn't engage class... ever.
Has an exam literally days before the final
It's not like Nowak is a bad guy, I just think he's pretty awful at teaching the content. If you're in one of his classes, don't panic, the curve and the formatting of the quizzes make the class bare-able. Just study like crazy for the quizzes.
Nice and generous about grade
Cons: Terrible English
Cannot understand him at all when he teach
I think Professor Nowak is a nice person. But in terms of teaching, he's not really good. His English is bad, and he just keep talking in the entire time. He's easy grader though.
Cons: Extremely boring. Cannot explain anything clearly. If he is asked a question, he will just talk for 5 minutes without clearly answering the original question. Uses words like "clearly" and "obviously" to when attempting to explain complex ideas. Accent is a huge distraction. Quizzes suck so incredibly hard. Homework problems are impossible to do without a ridiculous amount of help. He's the only person that teaches 270 so you can't even choose someone else. His method of scribbling on three whiteboards is ridiculous. His "lecture slides" are never posted online, but they're a joke anyway. He has no idea how to draw the letter "r," "g," or the the number 9. Will randomly stare at students for uncomfortable amounts of time, then smile. If you try and go to the bathroom he will lock the door behind you. The textbook very old, only available online, terrible at explaining concepts, yet as horrible as it is, still manages to be a better teacher than Nowak. Attendance is required.
Have fun, future CS students...
Cons: Has an accent, hard to pay attention, doesnt turn around from the board the entire lecture, hard exams
Extra credit was on quizzes. Class is extremely curved. Exams were tough. HW was in groups as well
Cons: Have to put work in, all about your group
Cons: Boring as hell to listen to
Helpful in class
Compromises on certain situations
Plenty of tests (so if you mess one up, it's possible to cover up without jacking up your grade)
Cons: Lecture a little on the boring side
Attendance counts towards grade (which might sometimes be a good thing?)
Work load can be high for some people
There was a presentation for each student every week, don't know if that will happen in all terms.
I got an A-. and given my condition that term, I'd say there was some serious curving.
Professor Nowak is pretty cool, very friendly if you actually talk to him. I had an accident the week my presentation was due, and he had absolutely no problems in rescheduling it to the end of the term. It's all good, if you can sit through his lecture. :)
Generous curve.
Cons: Slightly boring lectures.
I was never good at maths, let alone the stuff covered in CS270. Our TA was a little on the stricter side so my quizzes were horrible. But somehow even after all this i got a B+ which, for me, was VERY awesome. Prof. Nowak tries to boil down the topics to as simple as possible, and the curve is pretty awesome...
The course is structured so that you learn by doing many examles, and most of the test problems are slight variations of those examples you've already seen.
Highly recommended. 9/10.
- he is very knowledgable with the course material
- he covered more stuff than I expected
- he provides helps outside class time to help his students prepare for exams
- he reviews materials from previous lectures, so if i missed one class, i still can catch up
- he has never said anything would be easy to learn, but he said if you tried to learn it, you'll get it...it really encouraged me unlike some cs profs. out there who are completely full of themselves
- he always posts homeworks and solutions in timely fashion which is easy for us
- he keeps asking students for questions before moving on
- he grades fairly; what i mean is that he only grades what he asked, he doesn't care if you get the language syntax wrong
Weakness:
- he has accent and high pit voice, you have to get used to it in a couple classes before you can actually understand him
- he might not be able to answer your questions in class time because he has to cover lots of material, but it's ok because he is available after class
- his final exam is cumulative; even though it was open book, but there were lots of materials
Overall: He is a great teacher out there in Drexel. Take him, you'll like him unless his accent is really annoying you. Have fun...
