I've had the distinct pleasure of taking three classes with Dr. Yusin (Post Colonial Lit II, Memorializing Culture and Theory). Without a doubt, she is one of the most incredible professors I've ever had and she is most certainly the most intelligent individual with whom I have ever conversed.
Many of the previous comments listed here are true - she assigns a lot of reading, she's a tough grader, she expects a lot. My issue is that these things seem to have been presented as adverse things. You will work for every point you earn in her class, and it will be hard, but it will be worth it. My abilities as a writer, reader, and thinker have been challenged tremendously in Yusin's classes and I am all the better for it.
She will meet you on your terms, she is a caring and compassionate individual, and if you're not a total "focker", she won't be either.

Pros: -Follows all guidelines of a tolerant professor
Cons: -Does not lecture you because "there is no correct interpretation of the assigned reading"
-Keeps the class clueless about what she wants from students
In my ENGL320 with her we were studying Coetzee. It was not clear what she wanted from us at first, and what interpretation of the reading was at least going into the right direction. Does not really go over what she wants to see in the papers. Did not tell certain people in this class who needed to shut the fuck up to shut the fuck up. Unless you are an English or philosophy major you have nothing to do in this class. She is not going to give you a break just because you are taking this course to fulfill your requirement. Also, if you want to express your opinion you will frequently have to just shout it out because that is the format of the her class: you get interrupted by the people who need to shut the fuck up. All in all she is a good teacher that makes you think critically and work a lot to get an A.
P.S. Before student evaluations I asked her whether she could skim my final paper first draft. She said yes. After student evaluations I asked her again to remind her and she said no. I guess she really did not have time, but the way it looked was not courteous.

Professor Yusin was one of the best professors I've ever had at Drexel. She's incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. She does, however, expect A LOT from her students; the course number makes no difference to her. She challenges her students to think critically and analytically, constantly probing for what's at stake in some issue or another. She's very dedicated to her profession. I've taken three of her courses (South Asian Literature, Salman Rushdie, and Literary Theory) and done well in all three of them. In addition to the heavy reading assignments, her papers are also very challenging. But, she does encourage students to send her drafts and schedule times to meet with her to discuss the paper. I would highly recommend Professor Yusin, especially if one intends to make the most of the education that one is paying for.

Cons: 100 pages+ reading for every class,
Research project that she doesnt really go over,
She wanted to do "popcorn reading" like we were in first grade.

Very caring. I admire her ability to listen to student feedback. She is really pragmatic and willing to move the due-date of papers/tests if people are struggling.
Overall, one of the best professors at Drexel.

Although very knowledgeable in her field, one of the worst profs I've taken here at Drexel. She needs to really work on her people skills and learn to teach to a variety of different personalities and learning styles. She's rude, makes condescending comments to students, expects too much for a 200 level course of which no one is majoring in English. A great deal of my time is spent trying to prepare for the in-class discussions by reading the worst selection of novels she could have picked. I find myself rereading the books over and over and still not understanding anything. If you can avoid this class, do it. It's not a class worth stressing over.

Read the books and show up to class, it really isn't that hard to get an A.
I'll admit that she is a tough grader on papers but her exams are not hard if you do the reading. I average on the papers was a C+/B- but since I went to class and participated I managed to get an A-. Her in class final was easy but her take home was a bit challenging.

She'd never taught this class before so she had no idea what she was doing. The online quizes were terrible... the class averages were around 60. and the topics for papers were ridiculous.. the first one was about cultural literacy... like what???

Yusin, is one of the Professor's at Drexel who will make you work. I figure we are paying for school (a lot of money btw) why not get your money's worth. This is an english class and if one cannot read or write properly she will assist you with that. That being said I am tired of hearing bad remarks on teachers because they do their job and don't let lazy, lax students glide by with a good grade. Yusin demands that you come to class, do the readings and give back imput. WOW some people are so dense, shallow or plain stupid they cannot even do that, and the first thing they choose to do is take it out on the professor. I had no problems with this professor even if I disagreed with a grade or comment, I went to her we talked about it. The point is to act as an adult, take responsiblity for your actions, and do the work and she will treat you as an adult. She is very respectful and caring of all the students she comes into contact with. It is such a shame the same could not be said for the little kids who hide behind anonymous and write mean stuff on this site about her or other professors.

Professor Yusin is a compassionate, involved teacher that cares deeply for her students. She's intelligent, knowledgeable, and very well-spoken. Any question you ask her will be answered with respect and courtesy and she'll always make sure she replies to e-mails or concerns within 24 hours.
If you're looking for a class to sleep through, this is not it. She assigns a lot of reading and challenges her students to think critically. If you're looking to get the most out of your education, this is definitely the class to take -- your brain will be tasked to analyze, think, and communicate. She pushes her students hard, not as punishment, but to help them realize that they are much, much smarter than they think.
If you're looking to sleep through class, breeze through with a C+, and not learn anything worthwhile, don't take this class. If you're looking to grow as a person, take in some bangin' literature, and expand your intellectual horizons, definitely look it up.
Yusin is awesome. She gives brownie points if you buy her bagels.
P.S. - She's kind of short, though. :-\

This class is awesome! Yusin really cares about each and every one of her students. This is the first english class in 4 years at drexel I've taken that was actually intellectually stimulating and we're not just being read to like children the whole quarter.
She does assign a lot of reading but nothing that's impossible to do. She doesn't even require a lot of writing, just thought provoking conversation in class. All of the books we've read were interesting and the knowledge she has is overwhelming. She knows what she's talking about and also respects students' opinions.
I don't know why anyone would say that they would die if they take this class...I'm obviously still alive and so are you to be typing that. Where is the relevance in that statement? Really?
Go pick up a book for a change!

Postcolonial Lit with Yusin was a really good experience for me, it will change the way you think about literature and history. She's been extremely knowledgeable and insightful, and chose great novels for us to read. She definitely cares about her students and expects them to participate in class discussions, but i found the discussions laid back and interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to find the very rare good quality drexel english class.
P.S. she's like, so totally short though.
