Cons: Gives a lot of online work to do. You are expected to read all of the lengthy articles and be prepared for a short answer quiz at the beginning of every class.
This course includes a group project. I would recommend working with people who you know will do the work. Do not leave all the work to be done the week that the project is due. Make sure to verify due dates with the professor because they were not always clear.
Flexible
Fair grader
Cons: Fairly heavy workload
Didn't really like the way she approached the theme for 103
Thorpe wasn't bad, but I wasn't as thrilled with her as some of the other people who've reviewed her are. I liked the class, but she sort of missed the point of the theme for the 103 class I took, which was a music theme. There wasn't really much relation between music and literature, mostly just reading stories that mentioned music in them. Would've been nice to have the class be more about listening to and analyzing the lyrics to music. Her grading was pretty fair and it isn't hard to do well in her class if you put some time and effort into it.
Readings were easy to understand and relate to
Easy discussion posts
Extra credit project at the end of the term
Office hours were made available to discuss final projects
Cons: She doesn't teach any of the english electives that I have to take.
Her theme for the course was music. We ended up reading a lot of poetry, short stories, and song lyrics. We had reading check quizzes that were easy if you did the readings. She let us pass on one quiz. Class was engaging & there was a lot of discussion. Her discussion board system is great! She posted a couple questions each week and you had to respond to any or all of them - as long as your total word count for the week was 600+. You never had to log back on and comment on other student's posts.
Cons: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Cons: A bit boring in class for she speaks in a flat tone, but the content is interesting if you listen carefully and don't fall asleep.
One pop quiz every class, but they are very easy, as long as you did the reading.
She is a super easy grader. Even as an international student whose native language is very different from English in every way, I can get A in her class. By the way it is almost a native speakers' class for I am the only foreigner there. Mybe she is aware of the fact that I don;t speak English as my first language and being extra easy on my essays.
Very nice as a person. She allows you to turn in the hard copy at any time during the whole day of the due date, and she accepts paper slided under her door, which means you can totally get up in the early morning to do it on the next day of the actual due date.
I would recommend still going to the writing center besides doing peer review for major assignments, even though it is no longer required by her.
The greatest thing about hybrid class is that you can totally read your classmates' writing and thoughts and reply to them without speaking in the face. It allows much more room for giving and receiving critical advice without embarrassing the others and hurt feelings.
Cons: Online readings can get lengthy but you learn a lot from them.
Thorpe is a very easy grader and even though you don't spend a lot of time with the class you seem to learn a lot.
Cons: None
Do the weekly homework on time and meet with her to look over the rough draft of each of your papers.
We had a music themed ENGL 103, and we could listen to local bands as part of our weekly 'reading'.
Just one warning, you must read all of her assigned readings of the week, the in-class quiz requires you to do so, but don't worry, you will have enough time in the week to do those readings, and the quiz questions are such that they show you have read and does not require any recalling of obscure details. A very very good teacher.
It is time consuming to read others' work throughout the week and then write a 200 word critique of their work so if you don't enjoy that or want to put effort into helping others, don't take the class. If you are set on improving your writing and have something that you want to share with others for review, she is an amazing teacher to take.
Cons:
Thorpe in my opinion is the best english teacher at Drexel! If your paper doesn't deserve an A, she won't give you one. However, she will point out exactly what's wrong and work with you so you edit it so it deserves one. Many of her students published in the 33rd and she obviously loves what she does. She usually teaches hybrid so make sure you do all the readings and do exactly what you're told and you will do very well.
Cons: not really any except my class was 3:30-4:50 on a friday haha
I was in a non native speakers class and when I transfered from it to prof Thorpes Hybrid class, she helped me a lot to come to the other students level.
She is the best and I love her very much :)
Cons: There are quizzes almost every week based on the readings. You have to read to pass the quizzes, so if you don't like reading, I wouldn't take her class.
