annoying
the worst professor i have had in college so far. very biased to the right. he is not considerate to his students ideas. absolutely careless about preparing for class, he starts every class with "what did we talk about last time?" or "what do you want to talk about today?" he is close minded and ignorant. sure he might know a bit about american society (he is a retired police officer) but he made 0% effort to teach us about sociology or social problems. that class was a joke. he made a laughing stock out of me every day whenever i raised my hand. did not like that man

Pros: Very easy course.
Little work.
Cons: Does not logically argue or debate.
Does not listen when evidence is given against his opinion.
Is often misinformed.
This class discusses social issues and problems and I think works very well with the class format Ridgway uses. The problem is that instead of acting as a moderator or facilitator for a class discussion and debate, he participates in the debate and injects his own beliefs.
He is decidedly "conservative" and his beliefs are often just the talking points of the week from the "conservative" media, then true, thought out, ideological conservative positions. When presented with evidence and facts that contradict him he tends to counter them with anecdotal evidence and emotional responses, instead of conceding or factually countering.
He did at the end of the course personally thank me for strongly debating with him and thought that my willingness to debate my differing beliefs, opinions, and viewpoints significantly contributed to the class, even though "I'm completely wrong."

Pros: Class is incredibly easy.
No exams, only one homework assignment.
Grade is mostly attendance and participation.
Cons: Doesn't actually teach.
Class discussions rapidly get off topic.
Ridgway's classes are easy, if you want to get a 3 credit A with very little effort, take his classes, that's why I took him. That said, I was still expecting to learn something, but I didn't. There was no effort to build some sort of foundation of sociology or anything.

Pros: Ridgway is the absolute man. Take any class you can with him but make sure you sign up early because its no secret how awesome he is and his class is full right away. The class consists of a 7 page outline of a chapter you get to choose (which everyone gets a 100 on as long as you put a little bit of effort into it) your presentation grade which everyone gets a 95 on and all you have to do is facilitate a discussion about your chapter and then let everyone else talk and then your class participation. Basically your grade is how much you talk in class, but you don’t have to be scared to talk cause he is a very easy going guy who will listen to what you have to say. He plays awesome videos throughout the term, I think the one term we watched like 3 different comedian stand ups and The Following and Law Abiding Citizen, which was the best 2 classes I ever had at Drexel. Take this guy for your free electives definitely a GPA booster and a great time!
Cons: none what so ever

I like Ridgway's class format contrary to many other reviewers. It is a break from the routine lecture, exam, lecture, exam and allows for students to voice their opinion. The real problem with that is that there are too many students that take this class that can't learn to live with people who have differing opinions. This is a conversation and a debate at times. Not a time to tell others off because they don't believe in what you believe in. Be open minded and this class becomes a great learning environment.
And I am sorry to those that hate this class: raise your hand, offer something intelligent and get an A. What's not to like about that! I've taken many difficult science classes that make you work day and night for that same A.

Pros: Great professor, I never really participated in class, but the way he does it, it encourages me to participate. I also took him for Soc 320 at the same time and he does the same thing for all of his classes, so sometimes I would get off for the next class. He also loves giving A's so participate and you'll get an A.
Cons: You have to participate to get an A and do your outline and that's pretty much it. Sometimes people might not get an chance to participate.
Pretty much an easy A if you do your work

Pros: Easiest class in the world
Completely discussion based
No exams, just ONE project
Cons: You learn absolutely nothing
This is a good class to take as a senior if you don't want to do anything. For the student who is legitimately interested in the material, don't bother. All the discussions are student-run and are guaranteed to be off topic within 10 minutes. Ridgway is an ex-cop and likes to just talk about the legal side to every topic instead of the sociological side.

Pros: AWESOME
Cons: If you don't participate you're screwed.
Luckily, I'm the kind of person who loves to talk in class and participate (for the most part). His only grades are participation, which is done on a curve, and an outline on a chapter that your group chooses to present. Now, the first outline I did, I did the whole chapter. The second time I had him I skipped about 25 or so pages and as long as your outline is at least 9 pages long, you're golden. He doesn't read them. But, if you're not the kind of person who participates, at least show up to all or almost all of his classes, and talk to him beforehand. Let him know that you're worried about participating because you don't like to speak in class and you're more of an "observer". You can always barter your grade. I was pretty pissy when I found out that my friends who participated LITERALLY once got an A rather than the Cs that they were told they were going to get before they convinced Ridgeway otherwise.

Pros: Very Easy Going
Fair Attendance Policy
Cons: None
Professor Ridgway is a great professor. He really cares about his students and he will work with you (i.e., be flexible with deadlines) if something comes up. He uses a modern style of teaching that includes video presentations, student led facilitation of researched class topics, and a dash of realism that comes in the form of his experience with the Philadelphia Police Department. He is very knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches, and I highly recommend him.

GREAT class with a great professor. You learn a lot even though you only have one homework assignment, a chapter outline due the second week of class that you will have to make a presentation about with a partner at some point in the term. That's the only time you will use the book so buying it might not be worthwhile, you can use the copy in the library or share with someone and save some money, I wish I'd known to do that. The rest of the class is made up of class discussions and the occasional video, with discussions being led by the two people presenting a chapter plus input from Ridgway. If you like to talk and participate in class this is a good course for you, if you're more by-the-book you will probably not enjoy it. Towards the last few classes he lets you know how you are doing with participation so you know if/how much you need to improve by the end. Ridgway is a great guy with a lot of real world experience, yes he is opinionated which might offend some sensitive people but he is definitely interesting - and he truly cares for his students and wants everyone to be successful. I would love to take another class with him in the future.

Great professor and class format. Professor Ridgway allows for the expression of multiple viewpoints in his classroom, and this fosters meaningful, intelligent debate that benefits all. As long as you do your best to participate and really contribute to the class discussions, you should do well. There is no testing per say, but a lengthy comprehensive outline is required in addition to high participation and facilitation of discussion.

Class is so easy. Literally all you have to do is make an outline of a chapter with a group. The rest of your grade is based upon class participation. He makes tallies for every time that you talk, then counts them up at the end and bases your grade off that. I participated a good amount and ended up with an A- because i guess he didnt think it was enough, so make sure that you say a few things every other class. Definately take this class, somewhat interesting and super easy

I've taken him three times and would take him again if i wasn't graduating. The class is just a discussion class and you have to do one outline. your grade is based on participation, though i imagine even people that don't participate a lot do ok. But do yourself a favor if you take it, and actively participate and be involved, it makes it much more fun and you learn a lot about the world we live in. If you just sit in the back of the class and do homework, your really not getting the full value of his classes. yes he is easy, and yes its not a true "class" but it is just as, if not more valuable

People these days are crazy...Take ridgeway if u can, u learn alot, and the class particpation is a must, but just raise your hand and state your opinion once in a while thats no big deal!!!! NO midterms or finals just two outlines, which can be a lot of work if u wait till the last minute

Sorry, but he sucks. I agree that he sticks to the same class format for the entire ten weeks and his idea of participation is having you raise your hand to talk about redundant things or to make astute observations like "I think murder might be wrong". He harps nonstop on the participation but all anyone did was make boring, obvious comments that he deemed the educational aspect to the class. No work though, just two outlines. Oh and he opens every class with, "What did we do last time" because he doesn't seem to track any sort of progress or agenda which seems kinda lazy to me.

Great teacher. Doesn't read from the book and goes on tangents often. As long as you participate and do the two chapter outlines you will get an A. I'm surprised people did bad in his class. He does have conservative view points, but with all the liberal teachers at Drexel, it was nice to hear different views. I'd take again.

Class is fun if you like to talk a lot. He makes it real easy. You can miss up to 4 classes. David's real smart and even though courseload is low, you learn a lot.
