no quizes
no hw
no final exam
you can laugh at him
good advice about dealing with police
Cons: i did not learn a thing
harsh critic of students ideas
attacks liberal ideas
racist
annoying
the worst professor i have had in college so far. very biased to the right. he is not considerate to his students ideas. absolutely careless about preparing for class, he starts every class with "what did we talk about last time?" or "what do you want to talk about today?" he is close minded and ignorant. sure he might know a bit about american society (he is a retired police officer) but he made 0% effort to teach us about sociology or social problems. that class was a joke. he made a laughing stock out of me every day whenever i raised my hand. did not like that man
Little work.
Cons: Does not logically argue or debate.
Does not listen when evidence is given against his opinion.
Is often misinformed.
This class discusses social issues and problems and I think works very well with the class format Ridgway uses. The problem is that instead of acting as a moderator or facilitator for a class discussion and debate, he participates in the debate and injects his own beliefs.
He is decidedly "conservative" and his beliefs are often just the talking points of the week from the "conservative" media, then true, thought out, ideological conservative positions. When presented with evidence and facts that contradict him he tends to counter them with anecdotal evidence and emotional responses, instead of conceding or factually countering.
He did at the end of the course personally thank me for strongly debating with him and thought that my willingness to debate my differing beliefs, opinions, and viewpoints significantly contributed to the class, even though "I'm completely wrong."
No exams, only one homework assignment.
Grade is mostly attendance and participation.
Cons: Doesn't actually teach.
Class discussions rapidly get off topic.
Ridgway's classes are easy, if you want to get a 3 credit A with very little effort, take his classes, that's why I took him. That said, I was still expecting to learn something, but I didn't. There was no effort to build some sort of foundation of sociology or anything.
Cons: none what so ever
And I am sorry to those that hate this class: raise your hand, offer something intelligent and get an A. What's not to like about that! I've taken many difficult science classes that make you work day and night for that same A.
Cons: You have to participate to get an A and do your outline and that's pretty much it. Sometimes people might not get an chance to participate.
Pretty much an easy A if you do your work
Completely discussion based
No exams, just ONE project
Cons: You learn absolutely nothing
This is a good class to take as a senior if you don't want to do anything. For the student who is legitimately interested in the material, don't bother. All the discussions are student-run and are guaranteed to be off topic within 10 minutes. Ridgway is an ex-cop and likes to just talk about the legal side to every topic instead of the sociological side.
Cons: If you don't participate you're screwed.
Luckily, I'm the kind of person who loves to talk in class and participate (for the most part). His only grades are participation, which is done on a curve, and an outline on a chapter that your group chooses to present. Now, the first outline I did, I did the whole chapter. The second time I had him I skipped about 25 or so pages and as long as your outline is at least 9 pages long, you're golden. He doesn't read them. But, if you're not the kind of person who participates, at least show up to all or almost all of his classes, and talk to him beforehand. Let him know that you're worried about participating because you don't like to speak in class and you're more of an "observer". You can always barter your grade. I was pretty pissy when I found out that my friends who participated LITERALLY once got an A rather than the Cs that they were told they were going to get before they convinced Ridgeway otherwise.
Fair Attendance Policy
Cons: None
Professor Ridgway is a great professor. He really cares about his students and he will work with you (i.e., be flexible with deadlines) if something comes up. He uses a modern style of teaching that includes video presentations, student led facilitation of researched class topics, and a dash of realism that comes in the form of his experience with the Philadelphia Police Department. He is very knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches, and I highly recommend him.
Cons: Participation is a huge part of your grade, which can be annoying if you don't like talking in class.
