Pros: He talks so much that students never need to participate
Cons: The project is fucking hard
The class consists of a midterm and final research design proposal. Actual class time is mostly pointless plus he's really against phones and laptops. The research design is really heard especially taking the class as a freshman, but the best thing about Hunold is that he gives you feedback on each step of your project so you can make it exactly what he wants.

When I first looked up reviews of Hunold on DUreview, I was a little nervous about taking him because of the extreme negative opinions. However, even on my first day of class with him I was happily surprised to see that most of the negativity was completely unwarranted. The class consists of reading 2 books and multiple articles throughout, with lectures and discussions in class. Yes, it's a lot of reading but we're college students, this is to be expected. The workload consists of a midterm, a final, and a 3000 word term paper. I'm not finished with the class yet and haven't taken the final, but the midterm was 2 essay questions, based on a sample of 3 questions given beforehand, so if you were prepared throughout the course you should have no trouble. The same goes for the term paper - if you start to do actual research ahead of time and stay prepared, you should be fine. This is a great class for anyone with a serious interest in political science who is prepared to put in the work. Don't just take it to fulfill an elective, and don't expect an easy A. But for those of you who decide to take on a challenging class for your major or for personal strong interest, you can get a lot out of it. Hunold is extremely intelligent and likes to relate his coursework to current events in the world, and is also pretty funny too. So basically, the only reason you should reconsider taking a course with him is if you are uninterested in the topic, or looking for a GPA boost. If you really want to learn and are willing to put in your best efforts, you can get a lot out of it, and he recognizes the difference between students who make the effort and those who do not.

Great job@ the guy who posted 5 consecutive positive reviews. We really can't tell its the same person because you know, all the reviews weren't posted within the same 15minutes. How very clever of you.
Hunold, while I might say he isn't positively the worst teacher I ever got, is also hardly the best. His class was kind of similar to Ewasiuk (if anyone ever had him) in teaching style, but without Ewasiuk's easygoing and nice personality. Assigned a ton of reading, and the midterm was rather a joke; basically testing if you memorized the assignments or not.
Im not even kidding here, the midterm questions were almost directly taken from the textbook (but reversed, Jeopardy style), so if you have a photographic memory, you got that midterm down. So an example would be "What is blah-blah?" and the answer from the textbook would be 10-20 pages. And since, unfortunately for me, I don't have a photographic memory, I pulled a solid B. Apparently that was pretty good considering he said 40% of the class got a C or lower.
In general I just had a bad experience with this teacher. Seemed very arrogant, pretentious and unhelpful. I wouldn't take him again...and wouldn't recommend him to any of my friends either.

This man is a God in political science. He knows everything. He will take you to the dark side of the force. Be ware young padawan, the dark side is corruptible.

Dr. Hunold was probably one of the most challenging professors i have taken for political science. he expects alot during the class and rightfully so this is college. he knows his stuff and would recommend him to anyone who really wants to know what comparative politics is about. just do not BS your way through it because he will know and call you out on it.

Do your work, follow his instructions and appreciate his wealth of knowledge! You can get away with missing classes so long as you tell him in advance. He does give a damn and if you show interest, an A is EASY!

What in the world is this guy talking about? He trails off and is monotonous! The readings aren't too much they are just all over the place . it seems the authors of the books he picks don't know how to write and have no identified purpose in writing their books.
I dread this class every week! Not that I'm doing bad but its so boring and is worse than a root canal!

The truth is that his courses are difficult. But hey, we are in college. He does demand a lot of you but would you prefer that he took it easy on us instead? The reading is not impossible. The term papers can be a load but getting on them early will tame them greatly.

I really don't understand all of the negativity directed towards Hunold. He's kinda like a super-awesome guy. I think somebody just failed his class and decided to make him look bad. Hunold is not a difficult grader. There is a alot of reading assigned, but really if you pay attention in class and understand the main gist of the reading, you shouldn't have a problem. I've had an A on every quiz so far, as well as on the midterm. As a side note, Hunold mos def deserves a "chili pepper" on ratemyprofessors.com.

I must admit, I avoided taking this professor because of the comments I read here, but I've been pleasantly surprised by Prof. Hunold. Yea, he has high expectations and yes the workload can be a bit steep but He's a damn good professor who can explain the more complicated concepts associated with the "Science" end of political science well. Plainly stated, don't come into his class expecting to bullshit your way through it, if your a poli. sci. major and you can't hack it in his class, change majors, and if your taking his class as an elective prepare to work hard and take something from the class, or just don't bother.

Probably the best class and the best professor I've had thus far at Drexel. He's extremely intelligent and cares about what you think and how you think. I learned much in terms of politics and world issues. And even more in terms of writing and creating my own educated opinions on things; as opposed to what many other professors seem to look for. This class was a requirement for me, and I think it's probably a requirement for most who take it. Therefore, the class is obviously structured for your major. All of the negative comments are very unwarranted, as the class far exceeded any of my expectations. He made politics interesting.

Heartless Bastard! I would absolutely never recommend Hunold and would not wish him on my worst enemy. I am an open-minded, intelligent, and hardworking student who has had much experience with all History and Politics professors. He is an embarrassment to an otherwise wonderful department. Hunold picks favorites and for the others not so lucky he is only sarcastic, with an awful sense of disdain and disrespect. It is amazing that this short, pathetic, leprechaun is allowed anywhere near university students trying to make the most of their education. He hides behind his tenure and his self appointed power trip. He should put himself out of his own misery. I beg all students who have taken him to write formal complaints against him as he is a drain on this university.

asshole. he does not care for anyone but himself. he may be an intelligent man who knows about PSCI, but he has no interest in eliciting original thought from students, nor does he care about exhibiting rudeness and singling out students in class by negatively shooting down comments attempted by students who volunteer an opinion regarding the reading. He is one of those dreadful professors who pick favorites amongst people who kiss his ass, and regardless of how much work or effort you put into the readings and class participation nothing seems to work. He does not prepare one for grad school, because I've taken graduate classes at Drexel University and the seminar environment is completely different and more pleasant than one of his horror of classes. Just because someone has published and is tenured does not give them the right to be obnoxious to students who may actually do the reading and god forbid disagree with his interpretation of something. For those of you who enjoyed him, congratulations on being one of the special kids whom he randomly likes . I am so glad i finished and dr. mostov now teaches culture and values-the woman is just as brilliant and brings brilliance out of her students-thank god she's around. You want a great psci teacher? take oestreich, sullivan and muntean. need history? rau, knowles and ackert are intelligent and great academics. even wormsley for anthro-vietnam war is great. just don't take hunold he ruins ones thirst for true knowledge with his bitterness.

ive had Dr. H twice so for politics classes and hes probably one of the best euro politics professors we have. First off let me say that im a bio major so out of everyone in his class i have the least background knowledge. The work load is not excessive and its pretty reasonable, if you find it too difficult you have severe issues! Dr. H is not unfriendly if you treat him as a professor not someone whos obligated to give you an a for showing up. If you actually care the least bit about the topics he teaches youll find the classes great.

this guy rambles at times, but what did you expect him to do? ask the students about the book when he knows in his heart that only 10% of the students actually read the book. (by the way, i was in the 90% who didnt read). just try to pay attention in class and he will touch base on the important issues and might be on the exams.

Hey, I am still taking the class but I figure I can help a lot of people signing up for fall if I put this in now. I like the guy. The class takes some work (papers, reading and studying) but in all fairness hes a great teacher that make some great points. The class is interesting and the open discusion style is enjoyable. I do recomend the class.

I think a lot of people complain about Dr. Hunold because his courses are, simply put, challenging. He assigns a lot of reading, and he expects a lot out of you on your exams and/or papers. And no, he doesn't take any bull from anybody. But I enjoyed all three of the courses I took with him. The readings he assigned were thought-provoking, and lectures and discussions were designed to encourage critical thinking, even in a relatively dry course like The European Union. With regards to his people skills, okay, he comes off as a little impersonal and impatient sometimes. But I've had professors who are true a$$holes, and Dr. Hunold is not one of them. So if you are willing to put out a lot of effort, engage in serious thinking, and provide evidence that you're actually trying, you should find a course with Hunold to be a rewarding experience.

I just completed my first course with Professor Hunold and I felt he was an excellent teacher. He made the class very interesting even though the material was kind of dry. I also did not know too much about politics (this was an elective) before this class and now I know a lot more and I feel a hell of a lot more educated when it comes to the topics of the Middle East. I would recommend him to anymore. And I am a student who hates doing papers but I didnt mind it at all for this class because i was truly interesting in the material.

Easily one of the best professors I have taken while at Drexel and elsewhere. To all you people complaining about the work-load and or teaching style, you're entitled to your opinion but I seriously don't understand how you see it that way. Reading and writing papers is what college is about and seemingly contrary to popular opinion on this website, it DOES make you smarter. I wonder how much bitching and moaning you'll be doing when you leave Drexel to pursue a career in pumping gas, cuz with that kind of work ethic, you won't last very long in the real world buddies.
