Personal Statement

I began my first drawing and painting lessons at a private painting studio. The teacher I had was very methodical. We first learned drawing, then rendering with graphite pencils, then color pencil and finally we were able to choose a painting medium if we wanted. I then continued my art education at the college level, taking design, figure drawing, oil painting, watercolor, fashion design, ceramics, and other such classes. I loved my background in drawing and painting and wanted to see how I could apply it to other surfaces and bring it into the 3D world, and after a class in metalsmithing, I decided that would be what I would major in school. I received my Bachelor's in Fine Arts in 3D Media, with emphasis in Metalsmithing from California State University of Long Beach. I have worked as a teacher for the past 15 years. I taught after-school art classes at various schools, then moved on to teach art part-time at an elementary school, and then as a full-time art teacher at a middle school. I've helped students with creating portfolios to apply to art high schools as well as college with success. I am a multidisciplinary artist so I have not only done painting and drawing projects with my students, I have also taught them sculpting, ceramic arts, and sewing. I love teaching. I feel like it opens a world of possibility for people.
