Students are not the only ones not getting enough sleep, but sleepy students just can’t learn what they need to learn and can’t live up to their potential. This is a more important issue than many parents may realize.
We shared some stats to begin with –
- Only 11% of students say they sleep well.
- Adults should get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep, but many require more like 8-10 hours.
- 75% of HS students get less than 8 hours of sleep a night.
- Average sleep for college students is between 6-7 hours/night.
- 60% of college students say they are sleepy during the daytime.
Many students overestimate how much sleep they need. This is important and we should be talking with our students about this.
One of the topics we talked about was how noisy dorms can be. Check out our article about dealing with noisy dorms.
Here’s a sleep guide that also might be helpful.

One of the big problems is that students who are struggling or feeling overwhelmed may not realize that one of the causes is lack of sleep. Getting to this root cause is so important.
