In episode #068 we talked about how to tell if your student is ready for college. In this episode Vicki and Lynn discuss strategies, conversations and actions that will help your student increase their readiness. We talk about academic readiness, time and self-management, life skills, relationships and emotional readiness. If any of these areas present particular challenges for your student these suggestions will help you better support and prepare them for college.
We left you up in the air at the end of episode #68 when we talked about assessing your student’s readiness for college. (Be sure to go back listen to that episode.) This follow-up episode deals with some strategies you can use to help your student work on increasing their readiness. The more ready your student is for college life, the more likely they are to succeed.
We began by talking about academic readiness, but that is the area that most high schools try to address. Doing all that you can at home to support that work will help it “stick.” Help them understand that these things matter.
Parents can be a major influence on student preparedness in the areas of life skills. We shared some specific strategies for time management and self management, life skills such as laundry, making appointments, personal finances, developing and maintaining relationships with others – including professors, and especially managing emotions and resilience.
Lynn talked about the alarm clock that runs around the room and you need to get up to catch it to turn it off. It works and it’s fun! Check it out!
