Informational Interviews: Your Student’s Tool for Career Exploration

Your student is entering college and is undecided about a field of study or the career they want to enter. Your student is a sophomore, junior, or senior, is moving ahead in their major, but is unsure about the career they would like to pursue. Perhaps your student is a senior, approaching graduation, and would like to learn more specifics about a particular career — or begin to make some connections that may ultimately lead to a job.

These are very different scenarios, but they all have one solution in common: the informational interview.

What is an informational interview?

An informational interview is an opportunity for your student to learn about the real-life experience of someone who works in a job or field that interests them, or to learn about a field of study that they are considering. Your student might think of an informational interview as another research tool in their career exploration.

Junior Year: Time to Take These 10 Steps Toward a Career

Your college student has made it through the first years of college! Congratulations! They’ve survived the transition to college and weathered the sophomore slump. Now in their junior year, they’ve passed some big hurdles, but they’re not yet in that final lap toward graduation.

Junior year can be a difficult one. It is the time when most students are deep into the work of their major. They’re hitting difficult courses, and they know they’re running out of time to learn all they need to know and do all they need to do before they graduate, but the finish line isn’t quite in sight yet.

By senior year many students will have one foot out of the door. They anticipate working on their resume, visiting the Career Office, interviewing, and aiming for that first job.

But students who wait until senior year will already be behind on their career preparation. Junior year is an ideal time for the work of preparing for the job market.

10 Potential Pivot Points for Your College Student

The college years are a journey. As your student travels through these years, there will be moments of transition and turning points. Your student may need to pivot and change direction.

Sometimes these pivots may be prompted by a crisis — a time when a decision needs to be made that will determine future events. Sometimes the pivot may be more simply a modification — a slight shift, much as a basketball player might turn and change direction while still keeping one foot planted.

If your student needs to pivot, the shift may be of their own making — a decision to change something — or it may be a change that is unexpected or mandated. In either case, your student may take the shift in stride or may feel overwhelmed and unsettled. You may need to help your student process what this pivot means.

You’re never done with the job of parenting — even at the college level. Many students have a fear of failure and feel pressure to succeed. Some students are unable to handle failure when it happens. We try to build confidence in our students, but we actually need to let them build their own competence by making mistakes and learning from them. It’s a New Year! Do You Need Resolutions in 2021?

The year 2020 is finally in the rear-view mirror. There’s still a pandemic, and there’s still a lot of turmoil in our world, but somehow we need to find hope in the new year. 2021 will be better. We need to believe that.

Somehow, it seems more difficult this year to think about New Year’s resolutions. We’ve all just been hanging on — trying to survive. That seems enough for this year. Survive the present, look to the future, believe things will get better — and don’t try to challenge yourself too much.

But it is a new year, after all, and that brings with it not just hope for a better year, but a challenge to make it a better year.

We’ve offered some New Year’s resolutions, or thoughts, each year since College Parent Central began. So this year, I’ve gone back to reread them, which was an interesting reflective exercise on its own. (Click on the year’s date if you’d like to see the full list for some extra inspiration.) But I’ve selected just one resolution from each year to share here. The choice wasn’t always easy, but I tried to pull one thing that seems relevant to where we are today.

Take these as a start for your own reflections. You may be inspired to make some resolutions of your own, or you may just opt for survival this year. But I hope these provide a way for you to think about your college student (or almost college student) and about your parenting role in the new year.
